From a series illustrating castes and occupations: ironsmiths. Anglo-Indian at Tanjore (Thanjavore), late 18th century. With attached cover sheet of watermarked paper with an inscription in English. Gouache and gold on paper. 21.5cm x 31.5cm.
This painting is from a series illustrating castes and occupations made for the English as souvenirs of "the exotic Orient". According to Mildred Archer in Company Paintings the style represents an early stage in Company School or Anglo-Indian painting at Tanjore. Here local painting styles merged with additional European elements probably due to the artists being trained in Mughal circles during advances to the Deccan before the collapse of the Sultanates from where artists migrated south in search of new patronage.
