Balakrishna suckled by Yashoda. Brass, South India. Circa 18th century. 12cm

Details are fine, there is no chased detail due to the maker's skill, meaning all necessary fine detail was incorporated into the original modelling.  Yashoda's fingers are individually detailed and expressive. Her earings are exceptionally fine, as are her necklaces, armlets and bracelets, which were all clearly made of separate strands added to the model.  Her facial features are equally fine.  Balakrishna is charmingly modelled, his splayed legs gripping her waist, one arm outstretched to clasp her upper arm, the other resting against the breast he is about to suckle.

Condition: Yashoda was once holding something in her right hand, which has broken, and the left side (as we view) of the plinth's foot is missing.  There is a small pitted hole in her hair at the rear (casting fault) and small holes in the plinth at thre rear as well as a crack in the foot of the base, also at the rear.  As the bronze has consisitent patination, these losses etc. must have occurred some time ago.
