Leaf from an artist's sketches: nobleman and consort in a chariot. Bundi, 18th century. Brush-drawing on paper. 14.8 x 20.8cm
Formerly in the collection of Andrew J Kauffman II (1921-2003) who worked as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. He was also a leading mountain climber who in 1959 reputedly aided the Dalai Lama when escaping into exile over the mountains from Tibet to India. He owned a number of Indian miniatures, presumably acquired during his tenure in India. Seven from his collection (including the above, catalogued 34. Nobleman and Consort on Chariot (drawing), Bundi (?), 18th C) were exhibited between Nov. 20 and Dec. 11, 1966, at the Watkins Gallery, American University, Washington DC.
