Illustration to a ragamala series: Dhanasri Ragini. Deccan, late 18th century. Gouache and gold on paper. 23.4 x 14.5cm
On a palace terrace between flowerbeds and an ornamental fountain a young lady of nobility yearns for her absent lover whilst painting his portrait; a confidante consoles her.
A painting filled with detail: fish swimming in the ornamental fountain beneath whilst the surface catches the light of the sun; the influence of Persian painting in the gold-streaked sky; on the drawing board the nayika (romantic heroine) holds the portrait she has painted of her turban wearing and moustachioed lover, this act being a key element in the iconography of this ragini.
