Stucco Buddha, seated in meditation with hands in dhyana mudra. Original pigment remaining on face. Gandhara, circa 4th to 5th century. Current Afghanistan/Pakistan border regions. Mounted on wood plinth with backplate. Height: figure 21.5cm (backplate 34cm).
Professional "museum standard" restoration to neck, i.e. not an "invisible" repair of the type often used by unscrupulous dealers to sell on items as perfect, but a repair which allows the item to retain its original beauty without pretending to be entirely original. This restoration is clear in the images in being a thin uneven line of a paler colour, above the neckline of his robe, and is more evident in the image of the figure's rear where it has not been filled.
