Sculptural fragment: head of the Buddha. Gandhara, circa 3rd-4th century. Stucco with pigment remaining.* Height 8.3cm (10.5cm inc. mount)

*Clearer to the eye than the lens (except in 3rd from bottom image) is the original pigment which gives the skin a flesh tone and the hair grey (would have originally been black). Occasionally traces of pigment can be seen in Gandharan stucco sculpture which was not bleached by daylight, from being buried under soft ground or in a stupa monastry chamber.
