Husband and wife of the "Goojaratty Caste". Anglo-Indian at Tanjore, circa late 18th century. With attached cover sheet of watermarked paper with an inscription in English. Gouache and gold on paper. 31.5 x 21.5cm
This painting is from a series illustrating castes and occupations made for the English as souvenirs of "the exotic Orient". According to Mildred Archer in Company Paintings the style represents an early stage in Company School or Anglo-Indian painting at Tanjore. Here local painting styles were merged with European alongside Mughalised Deccani elements probably due to the artists being trained in the latter's late hybrid style before the collapse of the Sultanates from where artists migrated south in search of patronage. This so-called Goojaratty Caste may be the name given to Parsees who are long established in Gujarat.
