Jain kalam (school), probably Sirohi, western Rajasthan. Folio from a Sangrahani/Samgrahani Sutra. 18th century or ealier. 25.3cm by 11cm
Reveals strong Mughal influence in turbans and jamas (see below). Depicting in registers blue-skinned Vasudeva (Krishna, as absorbed into Jainism), sitting on a throne, an attendant behind with chauri (flywhisk), to the right registers within which are his emlems: the discus-jewel, bow-jewel (unusually, the arrows have their own register), sword-jewel, gem-jewel, club-jewel, garland-jewel and conch-jewel. The other side of the folio is unidentified, but would seem to depict emblems of another form of Vasudeva (there being nine in all).
A blend of Mughal and traditional Western Indian Jain elements appeared in illustrated manuscripts in the seventeenth century. In this blend, Jain figures lost their "protruding eye" and became dressed in the Mughal fashion, as can be seen in this example.
