Not one of Dasavataras - the more familiar 10 avataras of Vishnu - Badrinath as well as being a Himalayan temple housing a further avatara (twins Nara and Narayana, the chauri-bearers seen here, their status indicated by crowns), is also condidered by some Vaishnavas as an avatara of which there can be as many as 40.
