Maharana Bhim Singh riding Chetak, by Chataru. Mewar, circa 1828. Gouache and gold on paper. Page 32.5cm by 24.5cm; image 29.2cm by 20.6cm

This equestrian portrait of Maharana Bhim Singh is, we are informed by the text, dated VS 1885 (1828), which is the year of his death.  The artist’s name is Chatru (Chataru), and the Rana is riding a horse called Chetak (the name of the famous mount of Rana Pratap of Mewar in the 16th century).

A painting by Chataru depicting Maharana Ari Singh in a procession, listed in the Udaipur Palace Jotdan (or 'Box of Light') royal paintings store was sold in London, 1991, according to Topsfield, A Court Painting at Udaipur. Art under the patronage of the Maharanas of Mewar, 2001, p.200
