M.D. Natesan was an associate of Raja Ravi Varma, Rabindranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose at Calcutta's Bengal school of Art from the beginning of the 20th century. They were responsible for the creation of a Neo-Traditional or Revivalist style of painting under the initial guidance of E.B. Havell, its British Pricipal. Natesan's work - alongside others by Varma, Tagore and Bose - has been published in A Portfolio of Mahabharata Paintings by P Lal, , Writers Workshop, Kolkata, 2001[ISBN: 81-7595-900-2].
