The text has some later alterations but appears refer to the 7th day of the month of Vaisakha in the year of Samvat 1857 (1800 AD). With thanks to Dr Rajesh Rao for this information.
The Hitopadesha is a book of short stories in the form of fables similar to the Panchatantra (or Aesop's fables). One story which may be illustrated here involves a priest, a soldier and a family relative, concerning each of their fitness to administrate the kingdom.
