Portraits from the ancestral collection of a Mewar Thakur

Circa 1750 - 1830

These paintings appear to have once formed part of the ancestral collection of one of the Mewar Thakurs (land-holding local chiefs), some of whose forebears in the mid-to-late 18th century or later employed royal court artists trained at Udaipur to make their portraits, using similar conventions to royal portraiture.Indeed, some portraits feature Mahranas as well as thakurs. The links below will take to you a webpage for each painting containing details (where available through inscriptions) of the artist responsible, the individual persons - and mounts - portrayed, and where else these artists and subjects feature in publications on the painting of Mewar.
