Mewar folio from a Bhagavata Purana manuscript: Krishna extracts a toll to allow Radha to pass.* Mewar, circa late 18th century. Gouache and gold on paper. 24.5 x 20.7cm

*In this Bhagavata Purana episode the ever-mischievous Krishna has created a sport, Dan Leela, in which he stops gopis going about their business fetching and carrying milk by stopping them to demand a toll of the produce in their pots. Here we see a gopi with a pot made from imported Chinese blue and white porcelain on her head, indicating this is no ordinary gopi but is Srimati Radhika (Radha).
