Shri Nathji attended by Yamuna Devi and Radha (or Vrajdevi?). Nathdwara, circa 1880. Brush drawing on paper. 24.8 x 20cm
I am indebted to Tarun Pant who kindly identified Shri Nathji's attendant Yamuna Devi(to our right) and for suggesting it may be Vrajdevi (Vrajbhoomi) holding the aarti (lamp) to our left. Tarun explains: " 'Yamuna Devi' - the personification of the holy river Yamuna. This river has had a central role in the myths of Krishna, since he is supposed to have engaged in his pastimes and dalliances around its banks. Yamuna is also reckoned among the wives of Krishna and in Nathdwara paintings is portrayed in a manner similar to Krishna. Her typical likeness shows her as a blue-hued maiden proffering a garland of lotuses and/or a bunch of lotus flowers in bloom."
