This is a portrait of a nobleman whose name is given as Ravat Devabhanji, dated (running from one line to the next) V.S. 1812 (1755 AD), in the month of Asarh. The artist is named as Jiva, who also painted Ravat Fateh Singh with princes in this collection. He painted Maharana Ari Singh in 1767: Topsfield A, Paintings from Rajasthan in the National Gallery of Victoria, 1980, no.180. Others are published in Topsfield, A., Museums of India, The City Palace Museum Udaipur. Paintings of Mewar Court Life. 1990 (no. 22); Topsfield, A., Court Painting at Udaipur. Art under the patronage of the Maharanas of Mewar, 2001, figs.161, 172, 177, 181. In the latter, Jiva is described as the royal court's long established artist (ibid. p.200).
