Lac-turned teak storage vessel applied with silver foil insets. Sankheda in Gujarat, India. Early 20th century. Height inc. lid finial: 27cm; diameter 38cm.

Lac-turning involves the application of pigmented resin secreted by the Indian lac insect (lacifer lacca), boiled and hardened into sticks which, when pressed against spinning wood surfaces, melts onto the surface. In Sankheda in Gujarat, harkelai [a paste made from a mixture of glue and tinfoil] is also applied. This container's lid is covered with tiny circles with a dot in each. Old repairs - iron straps holding together splits in the wood, which, rather than detract, add to the charm of this item.
