Ragamala illustration. Dhanasi Ragini. Jaipur, circa 1830. Gouache heightened with gold on ncard. 16.5cm by 12.5cm.

Iconography here is in the Rajasthan tradition, in which a lovelorn lady draws a portrait of her (absent) beloved on to a typical writing/drawing tablet.  It was believed that such an image of an absent person could magically invoke their presence.  A companion looks on and appears to be offering solace or advice.
