Man with woman offering pan, both from the Mudali caste. Anglo-Indian school at Tanjore. Circa late 18th century. Gouache and gold on paper. 31 x 22cm
The Mudali or Mudaliyar cast were wealthy landowners of the area around present-day Chennai. Their wealth is reflected here in their jewellery and in the male's fine gold-edged angavastram draped over his shoulder. Both wear the marks of Shaivites.
