Rao Raja Bishen Singh, Uniara. Circa 1790. Gouache and gold on paper. 22.7 x 14cm.

This kalam (school of painting) is "Jaipuri" rather than from Jaipur itself. This is a result of unusual circumstances, as the painting of Uniara was earlier of the Bundi kalam, until Bishen Singh’s reign (1777-93), when it changed to that of Jaipur, probably to signal a more appropriate cultural affiliation to its closest political ally.  On the reverse is an inscription informing us it is of Bishen Singh (written as Rao Raja Vishnu Singhji), and refers to his birthday, presumably when it was presented to him by the artist.  It therefore must predate 1793.
