Folio from a manuscript. Jain school, Western India, probably Delhi. Gouache on warqa, circa early 15th century. Approx. 11.8 x 28.2cm
For another illustration from the same manuscript see Pramod Chandra, ' Indian Miniature Painting, The Collection of Earnest C. and Jane Werner Watson', cat. 2, pp 6-7.
Folios from this manuscript (and possibly others of the type) remain a puzzle with regard to their identity. Robert J Del Bonta, an expert in the field of Jain manuscripts, kindly informs me they are considered to be linked to animal fables such as the 'Panchatantra' or 'Hitopadesa' making them secular in subject and not relating to Jain religious texts except in date and style.
